In the United States, for the most part, all radio transmissions fall into one of three categories: The operator is allowed to transmit on that frequency (amateur, 'business band', aviation, military, etc.) The radio is allowed to transmit on that frequency (CB, FRS, MURS). To sum it up, it has to be MURS Part 95 certified or be grandfathered in, of which the Baofeng is neither. Of course CB uses way different frequencies but I'll tell why it isn't legal, in case it helps someone. It has to be certified and it has to be able to operate on ONLY the CB channels.
So I just got my uv-82 from amazon today, and have got the tech test questions down and am I ready to go take it, but I realized a problem. One of the main reasons I wanted a baofeng is because it seemed like an awesomely cheap option to have a radio that I can use for both vhf marine (I'm on the water a lot) and gmrs when I'm out hunting or just outside. Now I'm seeing for some reason it's technically illegal to use the baofeng on gmrs? Why is this, after all these are frequencies you don't even need a license to operate a walkie on?
